We produced animal masks for Mukashibanashi Hotei (Fairy Tale Tribunal) featured in Heart Net TV’s “Shuwa De Tanoshimu Minna No Terebi! (TV for Everyone: Enjoy It with Sign Language!)”, an NHK Educational program broadcasting popular NHK programs with sign language.
Fairy Tale Tribunal is a drama series broadcasted from 2015 until 2018 on NHK Educational, in which fairy tale characters argue their cases in court in accordance with today’s law. Zeppet took charge of the production of animal masks and special costumes.
To enable the use of sign language in the show, we produced new animal masks specifically designed for manualists. Because sign language communications involve a lot of facial expressions and hand gestures, we designed masks that exposes the manualists’ faces but are still identifiable as story characters.
By applying makeup on the exposed face to merge the face and the mask, we realized facial communication naturally coexisting with the atmosphere of the fairy tale character.
